The Carnegie Three at Andover Bowls Club

Josh Carnegie (10) has joined his Dad and his Grandad to put three generations of the same family on the green at Andover Bowls Club.

Having seen a match on television last year, Josh was inspired to give it a whirl, so he went along to the club house with his Dad and rolled a few woods (bowls) across the carpet with then-President, David Hamilton.

On his first day on the green, Josh’s natural ability surprised onlookers as he landed a couple of woods right next to the jack — an impressive feat for a first timer of any age. Aspiring zookeeper Josh said he finds the sport “Relaxing — except when the bowl doesn’t go where I want it to go.”

Josh’s Dad, Andy, who has been bowling for two years, said, “Andover Bowls Club has been really great with him, even sourcing a set of junior woods and reducing the minimum age so he could play.”

Current club President Cindy McLaughlin commented, “We’ll always put the effort in to make people feel at home with us, whatever their age, and I think seeing a young player like Josh doing so well is a lift for us all.”

Josh and Andy are regularly joined on the green by Grandad Jim, who has been bowling for ten years. One of Josh’s two older brothers has cheekily claimed he’d be better at the sport than his relatives but has so far respectfully declined the opportunity to prove it.

This year the Club is again honoured to have one of our members, Cynthia Hamilton as  Women's County Vice President.  Cynthia has been our Club's Ladies Champion for the last 3 years, and has now made a new Club Record by winning the Title on 8 occasions in total.  She has been a member for 30 years and has been active on our committee for many of those. Due to Covid-19 Restrictions, Cynthia will be taking up her duties next year.

Bowling in 2020

Although things have been very different this season, once we were given the 'Go Ahead' we arranged games within  the club for our members, and although there have been no league games, we have recently arranged Friendly games with both Salisbury and Pewsey, both home and away.

If you would like to try bowls for yourself we'd be happy for you to come and have a go. Either contact us, (see contact information) or if you know one of our members, speak to them, they will be only to pleased to introduce you to the game.  We have our own coaches and our members are very willing to help you feel at home. We'd love to see you and your first session is absolutely free.  Let's Roll

We have already  welcomed some new bowlers to the club this year, see below about one of them.

Other 2020 Activities

Some of our members, led by Rob Still,  got together to give our clubhouse a facelift, it's quite a giant undertaking, as you can see in the photos below,  but our undaunted volunteers took on the task valiantly.  And still it continues.  Well done to all of them.
