Andover County Mixed Top Club Team 2019
Winter Competitions
Hamblin Trophy
Andover have now played five games in this competition and have won 4 of those. Our next game is on 22nd March against Winchester City, if we win this we will probably be in the semi-final/final. But we need to win to achieve this.
The first and second games which were against Fleming Park and County BC were convincing wins by both rinks, the third match against Hyde Abbey 2 was a somewhat tougher one but in the end we had one winning rink and the other only lost by 2 shots so we won on shot difference.
We are at present top of league B but with another 3 matches to go anything could happen. Our next game is on 2nd February against Hedge End 2 at 6.30 p.m. These games are played at Riverside BC, Winchester
John Ash Trophy
Andover beat Downton in the first round of this competition 73-19 after 16 ends, a resounding result. The game was played on Sunday 9th Feb at Five Rivers BC Salisbury,
Moreton Cup
Andover beat Oakley in their 3rd match in the Moreton Cup. Rink 3 won convincingly 28-11 leading all the way but on Rink 4 the lead changed 5 times before ending all square at 22-22.
Although this was a slight setback Andover may still qualify for the semi final if they beat Kingsclere in the final game on 8th March.
Sunday 17th November - Andover played their second Moreton Cup Match against a strong side from Atherley on .
We started well and the scores were level at 14 each after 10 ends.
However Atherley piled on the pressure in the next 5 ends after which time Andover were trailing by 17-33.
Andover rallied in the remaining 6 ends but lost the match by 7 shots 31-38.
Andover are still in with a chance, though as there are now 4 teams that each have 5 points so there is all to play for in the remaining games against Oakley and Kingsclere.
On Sunday 13th October Andover played Littleton in the first of 4 matches in the Moreton Cup at Longmeadow Indoor Bowling Club.
Littleton were runners up in the Overall Competition last year and were runners up again in Sunday's match when Andover beat them convincingly by 59 shots to 39 picking up all 5 points.
The winning margin would have been even greater had one of our rinks not dropped 10 shots on the last 2 ends.
Our next match is against Atherley Bears on 17th November'
Summer 2019
County Mixed Top Club
8th September - We played at Atherley to represent the South in the semi-finals
of the county Championship against Alton Social who represented the North and
although our team played well, Alton were the better team on the day.
This is the first time we have gone so far in the competition, huge congratulations
to the team for a fantastic achievement.
27th July - We beat Eastleigh Rail in the Area Final of the County Mixed Top Club
at Hyde Abbey and will now represent the South in the
semi-finals of the County Championship at Atherley on 8th September.
We do not know who we will be playing yet but if successful then the final is also to be played on that day.
The score was once again 3-2 with Jackie Kingston (Ladies Singles), Robin and Cynthia (Pairs), Pete Anthony, Bill,Maureen and Cindy (Fours), picking up the points.
This competition was introduced in 2014 and this is the first time that Andover have progressed beyond the semi final. Well Done.
7th July
The area semi final which was at home to Waterside, again Andover were victorious by a 3-2 score.
Jackie Kingston won her singles, Robin Kingston and Cynthia Hamilton won the mixed pairs and Pete Anthony, Bill Rawlinson, Cindy Mclaughlin and Maureen Whaites won the Fours.
15th June
Andover followed on from their success against Meon Valley, by beating Mayfield Park away in the next round.
Chris Sutton and Jackie Kingston won their singles games and the triples with John Allenby, Dave Hamilton and Rita Loader picked up the 3 points to secure the match.
Sunday 26th May
We had a very enjoyable away match at Meon Valley Bowls Club, Bishops Waltham, and it was the day our luck changed.
All disciplines were close games, except the Mixed Fours which we won easily and at 2-2 we were waiting for the result of the Mixed Triples. It was all square after 18 ends. Although we were entitled to the mat, we gave it away. Our Lead, Rita Loader put her first wood straight on the jack and although it was eventually moved, it held shot and gave us a 3-2 win. We will now play Mayfield Park away in the next round on 15th June.
National Men's Top Club
Saturday 25th May
We were up against strong opponents again being drawn against Eastleigh Rail.
Andover lost 3-2 but won both the Triples and Fours convincingly.
In the overall analysis it was a very close thing as Pete Anthony was all square after 20 ends in the 2 Woods and lost by one just shot.
A very good performance by our team nevertheless.
National 2 Fours
Saturday 18th May
We faced strong opposition from the Sports Centre from Southampton, a small club and elite club and were too strong for us on the day.
We conceded the match after 18 ends with the score 18-57.
The Tony Allcock Trophy
Sat 11th May
Our first try at this national competition, which requires two mixed rinks of players over 60 years of age.
We played our first knockout round at home to Littleton.
One of our rinks started slowly but came back gradually with a final score of 11-22 the other rink started well and were only ever behind once on end 8 by one shot, they then forged ahead only losing one more end. Going into the last end they needed 6 shots to win the match overall and they were holding 6 when unfortunately, the opposing skip (Brian Baxendale) put his last wood in for 3rd wood so we ended up losing the match by 3 shots. Final scores were 11-22 and 19-11
